A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (por Greg Brooks y Gary Taylor)

El cuarto y probablemente más conocido álbum de Queen se grabó en Inglaterra entre Agosto y Noviembre de 1975. Dada la complejidad de las composiciones nada menos que 6 estudios fueron utilizados en la grabación (Roundhouse, Sarm East, Rockfield, Scorpio, Lansdowne, Olympic). A menudo, los miembros de la banda grababan varias partes simultáneamente para trabajar de manera más eficiente y terminar el trabajo a tiempo. Las sesiones eran largas y agotadoras y duraron cuatro largos meses. De nuevo, el grupo produjo el álbum con sus colaboradores de confianza, Roy Thomas Baker y Mike Stone, y el resultado fue un genuino triunfo a todos los niveles, un meticuloso ensamblaje para crear el mejor álbum posible. “Opera” lanzó a Queen a nivel mundial de una manera espectacular y les convirtió en pieza fundamental del tablero internacional. Es sabido que el éxito o fracaso de A Night at the Opera iban a ser determinantes para el futuro del grupo. En caso de fracaso, es posible que el grupo no hubiese sobrevivido. Queen podían haber puesto punto final a su carrera. A pesar de contar con logros como haber colocado dos álbumes en el top 10 de ventas, significativos éxitos internacionales con Seven Seas of Rhye y Killer Queen, y llenar conciertos por toda Inglaterra, al principio de 1975 el grupo pasaba por serias dificultades financieras.

A pesar de haber grabado y dar conciertos sin parar durante 3 años, sus esfuerzos todavía no se veían recompensados, y por si fuera poco, y por increíble que parezca, Roger, John, Brian y Freddie todavía peleaban para aumentar el sueldo mínimo que les pagaba Trident, con quien tenían un contrato.

John Deacon se había casado con su novia, Veronica Tetzlaff en Enero, pero cuando solicitó a los infames managers de Queen y propietarios de Trident, Norman y Barry Sheffield, las 5.000 libras que necesitaba para pagar la entrada de una casa, la respuesta fue un no rotundo. La misma respuesta recibió Freddie cuando pidió un piano nuevo para componer, mientras tanto, tal y como contó Freddie, los dos hermanos se paseaban por Londres en Rolls Royce nuevos, y como dijo “algo no cuadraba”.

En ese momento de la historia, aparece Jim Beach, el abogado que consiguió eventualmente liberar a Queen de su nefasto e injusto contrato con Trident. Jim apareció unos años antes de la sonada y definitiva ruptura con Trident y los hermanos Sheffield, lo que supuso un costoso divorcio e implicaciones financieras para los seis álbumes siguientes. Los esfuerzos de Beach para liberar a Queen de sus compromisos con Trident no fueron en vano y permitieron al grupo enfrentarse a su nuevo proyecto sin distracciones ni presiones financieras. John Reid, el manager de Elton John, fue contratado para ocuparse de los negocios mientras el grupo se podía dedicar a lo que mejor hacían: componer y grabar nueva música. El conflicto con los Sheffield dejó evidentemente huellas dolorosas, sobre todo en Freddie, y de estas heridas salió el virulento y brillante ajuste de cuentas “Death on Two Legs”, con su siniestro y transparente “Dedicado a... “.





Haciendo borrón y cuenta nueva, Queen, aliviados para poder crear, se dedicaron el siguiente trimestre junto con sus fieles Roy Thomas Baker y Mike Stone a crear de manera meticulosa y agotadora el álbum que Brian definiría más tarde como el “Sergeant Pepper de Queen”.
La portada del álbum, simple y suntuosa, representaba un diseño actualizado y coloreado del logo diseñado por Freddie colocado en el centro. El interior del LP que se abría como un libro seguía el mismo estilo, con las letras de las canciones impresas en las dos caras interiores, y por primera vez en color, con fotos de su última gira.

A Night At The Opera es un conjunto excepcionalmente rico y diverso - algunos dicen inverosímil- de composiciones cuidadosamente construidas de los cuatro miembros del grupo. Cada tema es potente, y aunque sea obvio, no lo pasemos por alto: cada momento, desde el principio al final está magníficamente grabado. El brillante y añorado ingeniero Mike Stone que murió en 2002 ha sido capital en el sonido de este disco, y de otros. Opera abarca todos los estilos y géneros musicales y toma caminos tan insólitos como el propio título del álbum.
Aparte del material más conocido, en este álbum, se encuentra también la exquisita composición de Mercury Love Of My Life, inspirada, según los rumores, en su novia de toda la vida, Mary Austin - algo que él mismo evidentemente ni confirmó ni desmintió nunca. Las armonías y la voz principal de Freddie son sobrecogedoras.
Freddie: “Love of My Life es una preciosa baladita. Aquí entran mis influencias clásicas. Brian toca una verdadera arpa. Me acuerdo de haber pensado: ¡le voy a obligar a tocarlo hasta que se le caigan los dedos!”.

La voz de Freddie es sencillamente extraordinaria en el épico tema de Brian The Prophet’s Song (canción inspirada por un sueño) así como en sus propios temas Seaside Rendezvous o la delicada Lazing On a Sunday Afternoon. Freddie: “Brian tiene un tema increíble, de dimensiones épicas, The Prophet’s Song, que es una de nuestras mejores canciones hasta la fecha. Tiene su momento de lucimiento con su guitarra. Sabes, la guitarra de Brian está hecha a medida, y él casi consigue que hable. En este tema literalmente lo hará.”

Las otras contribuciones de Brian, Sweet Lady, ’39 y Good Company no tenían nada que ver con The Prophet’s Song y nos presentan a Brian como un cantante más que competente. Brian canta en Good Company y ’39 pero de manera muy astuta, deja el micro al portentoso Freddie Mercury en Sweet Lady y The Prophet’s Song... un Freddie en el momento álgido de su proeza como voz superdotada. Roger Taylor también canta su canción, I’m In Love With My Car, de manera tan impecable que la convierte en otro tema importante del disco, mientras que John también deja a Freddie cantar su canción Best Friend. El álbum empieza de manera más bien dramática con el mordaz tema de Freddie, Death on Two Legs y termina de manera más sosegada con una nueva mezcla de God Save The Queen.

Freddie: “Death On Two Legs tiene la letra más viciosa que haya escrito jamás. Es tan vengativa que Brian se sentía culpable al cantarla. Nadie puede imaginar cuanto veneno y odio he puesto al cantarla, y eso sin hablar de la propia letra. Escuchen la letra atentamente. Es una pequeña obra cruel que saca mi vena más diabólica. Generalmente, no me gusta explicar lo que pensaba al escribir esta canción. Va de un hombre viejo y repugnante que conocí. La letra salió sola. Decidí que si quería realmente subrayar algo, tenía que hacerlo sin medias tintas y llegar al fondo. Luego me costó cantar estas palabras. Quería que sonaran lo más ásperas y crudas que fuera posible. Mi garganta sangraba. Cambiaba la letra cada día, intentaba hacerla cada vez más viciosa. Cuando los demás la escucharon, se quedaron en estado de shock. Cuando se la expliqué, dijeron “¡Ah, vale!”. Luego leyeron la letra y se asustaron. Pero yo ya había dado el paso, lo asumía totalmente. Fui un demonio durante unos días”.

Tomando el título de una película clásica de 1935 de los Hermanos Marx, A Night At The Opera, fue terminado a principios de Noviembre de 1975 y publicado mundialmente unos días más tarde, el 21. Recibió el elogio unánime de la crítica. Rápidamente se convirtió en el primer disco de Queen en alcanzar el número Nº 1 y el primero en alcanzar el disco de Platino. El disco fue top 5 en EE.UU., logrando el disco de oro, un éxito debido en parte a una larga y agotadora gira de conciertos en Estados Unidos, Canadá y Japón a principios de año.

El 31 de Diciembre de 1975, la composición más celebrada de Freddie Mercury, la gigantesca, fascinante, cautivadora, revolucionaria y épica obra maestra - todas estas adjetivaciones han sido utilizados una y otra vez para describirla - Bohemian Rhapsody fue publicada y cautivó al mundo entero (y a la propia comunidad artística). Era el primero de los dos únicos sencillos extraídos del disco acoplado con la cara B I’m In Love With My Car de Roger Taylor (que está entre algunas de las portadas más buscadas por los coleccionistas del mundo entero a la que se refieren como With My Car I’m In Love), el sencillo fue un éxito planetario colosal. Nueve semanas en el Nº1 de Inglaterra, y Nº1 en muchos otros países, el sencillo no tardó en convertirse en los seis minutos más venerados y queridos de la historia del rock. Otorgó a Freddie su segundo premio Ivor Novello en Enero de 1976, y después ganó todos los premios que el mundo de la música pueda otorgar a una canción. Internacionalmente reconocido como la obra de un genio, “Rhapsody” (a secas, como su autor la llama) ha sido votada la canción Nº1 de todos los tiempos en repetidas ocasiones en encuestas inglesas, ha sido distinguida como canción del Milenio, y canción número uno de todos los tiempos por el Libro Guiness de los Records.

El video-clip que ilustra la canción tiene una curiosa historia. A punto de empezar una gira de 25 fechas en Inglaterra, Queen no pudieron acudir al programa de TV de la BBC Top Of The Pops para promocionar el single y decidieron enviar un pequeño film con la canción. Estas imágenes ahora universalmente familiares fueron grabadas en los Estudios Elstree en Noviembre de 1975. El rodaje duró sólo dos días y costó menos de 4.000 libras. Con su secuencia de apertura que recordaba al icónico retrato del grupo de Mick Rock que aparecía en la portada de Queen II, este espectacular film de Bruce Gowers/Queen abrió las puertas a una nueva manera de promocionar la música: el video musical.

En Diciembre de 1991, un mes después de la trágica muerte de Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody fue lanzado de nuevo para ayudar a la fundación benéfica The Terrence Higgins, como sentido homenaje a su creador. El single tenía dos caras A, con These Are The Days Of Our Lives (del álbum Innuendo). No sorprendió a nadie que volviera a ocupar el primer puesto de las listas de ventas de muchos países, convirtiéndose así en el primer disco que es Nº1 en dos ocasiones distintas. Dieciséis años después de su lanzamiento original, en 1991, la exitosa película Wayne’s World (El mundo de Wayne) incluía la canción en una escena memorable dentro de un coche. La canción fue publicada de nuevo al año siguiente en EE.UU. y alcanzó el Nº2 de la lista Billboard y acercó a Queen a una audiencia más joven.

El sencillo siguiente, el segundo y último extraído de este álbum fue You’re My Best Friend de John Deacon, con su característico piano eléctrico tocado por John y con el cuento de ciencia-ficción de Brian May en la cara B, ’39. Inspirado por Veronica, la mujer de John, con quién se había casado a principios de aquel año, el sencillo fue publicado el 18 de Junio de 1976. Best Friend mostraba un lado más suave del grupo, cuyos sencillos hasta la fecha habían sido más rockeros. Este tema es uno de los favoritos de los fans y es todavía muy popular en las radios americanas. Permitió a John tener su primer top 10, alcanzando el Nº7 en las listas de ventas inglesas. Una vez más Bruce Gowers, dirigió el video-clip, una pieza atmosférica grabada en Abril de 1976 en los estudios Ridge Farm un caluroso día de verano, entre cientos de velas encendidas.

queen es lo maximo es lo ma-xi-mo !! nadie ninguna banda le puede ganar ningun grupo nadie su musica es inspiradora motivante .... como quisiera que mercury nunca hubiera muerto pero el vive cada vez que escucho sus canciones pienso me imagino que el mismo me esta cantando asu es emocionante los amo !!! :D

Todas las canciones del album son buenas, un sonido espectacular y sobretodo la voz, capaz de quitarte el aliento. The Prophet's song facilmente logra captar tu atencion si por primera vez escuchas el album, sin dejar de mencionar 39 y Love of my life. Crecí con Queen y espero que las proximas generaciones crezcan apreciando las buenas obras musicales. Y el final del disco es de infarto. Una joya musical.

la verdad que es recomendable este album comprenlo por que tiene unos temazos que la verdad que se pasaron y ademas tiene la cancion bohemian rhapsody
