SHEER HEART ATTACK (por Greg Brooks and Gary Taylor)

El tercer álbum de estudio de Queen, se grabó entre Julio y Septiembre de 1974, en cuatro estudios diferentes en Inglaterra y Gales (Trident, Wessex, Rockfield y Air). Fue producido por Queen y Roy Thomas Baker, ejerciendo de ingeniero el eficiente Mike Stone.

Algo diferente de los dos primeros álbumes, Sheer Heart Attack mostraba más cohesión como banda, algo imposible de lograr en los dos discos precedentes por el modo errático en el que se habían grabado. El primer álbum, por ejemplo, se grabó en las horas libres en las que se permitía a la banda usar los estudios Trident, es decir cuando estaban desocupados. Este álbum, al contrario, se grabó sin esos elementos de distracción, con más calma y en condiciones más ortodoxas, y dio lugar a un trabajo más fuerte y diverso que contenía algunos de los clásicos más queridos de la banda. Esto fue un logro debido al hecho de que Brian May estuvo ausente en muchas de las sesiones porque contrajo hepatitis durante la gira Americana de Mayo y solo pudo grabar sus partes de guitarra y voces mucho más adelante, casi al final del proceso. A pesar de que las circunstancias no fueran las ideales esto no se pone en evidencia en el resultad final del trabajo, y más de tres décadas después el álbum sigue siendo uno de los favoritos entre los incondicionales de Queen. Ha sido votado en muchas ocasiones alcanzando el top 5 entre las votaciones de los fans.

Sheer Heart Attack es un trabajo más pop que sus dos predecesores y sin duda el éxito internacional y el respaldo de la crítica fue granjeado por el tema Killer Queen que Seven Seas Of Rhye nunca logró. Brian posteriormente comentó: “Por alguna extraña razón teníamos una sensación muy diferente con Sheer Heart Attack por el modo en que nos vimos forzados a grabarlo (refiriéndose a su enfermedad) incluso admitiendo todos los problemas que tuvimos que afrontar ninguno estuvo descontento con el resultado.” RogerTaylor: "Es mi favorito. Se mantiene muy bien. Es mucho más conciso, muy variado y dinámico. Los diferentes sonidos son agradables".

El tema Killer Queen de Freddie Mercury– por el que más tarde recibió el primer Premio Ivor Novello - es la canción más conocida del álbum, pero la canción que lo abre, Brighton Rock, de Brian, es el prototipo de los primeros Queen y pronto se convertiría en un favorito y marca de la casa de sus conciertos de la época.

Now I’m Here, fue compuestopor Brian en el hospital en el que le ingresaron tras caer enfermo en Agosto (en mitad de las sesiones de grabación), esta vez con una úlcera de duodeno. La canción está inspirada en la banda inglesa de rock amiga de Queen, Mott The Hoople, donde un desalentado Brian reflexionando sobre la vida en la carretera con Mott el año anterior y sobre su incierto futuro.

Otros temas menos conocidos pero no menos logrados son la balada al piano de Freddie Lily Of The Valley, que contiene menciones a ‘Messenger from Seven Seas’ y ‘The King Of Rhye’, In The Lap Of The Gods, In The Lap Of The Gods… Revisited y la jovial Bring Back That Leroy Brown (con Brian May tocando el ukuleley el banjo). También aparece en el álbum la primera composición de John Deacon para Queen, la encantadora Misfire, donde toca casi todas las guitarras como hace Roger Taylor en su intrigante tema Tenement Funster donde también interpreta la voz principal. Brian con frecuencia pasaba por alto She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilletoes), completada con auténticos sonidos de pesadilla de Nueva York (por si acaso te habías planteado saber qué eran todos esos extraños ruidos que aparecen en el tema), y la sublime Dear Friends con Brian al piano y la voz cautivadora de Freddie, también forman los momentos álgidos del disco.

La primera canción firmada por los cuatro componentes de Queen, la frenética Stone Cold Crazy, también está incluida y es una de las primeras canciones con las que experimentó la banda en sus primeros ensayos y conciertos. La canción empezó a cobrar vida en la anterior banda de Freddie, Wreckage, a finales de 1960, con una forma muy diferente, y fue totalmente revisada por Queen para sus conciertos. Mucho después en 1992, Metallica hizo una versión del tema completamente divergente que llamó la atención de un público completamente diferente hacia la canción y hacia Queen.

Otro tema, en este caso Sheer Heart Attack de Roger Taylor que se pretendía incluir en el album del mismo nombre no logró ser terminada a tiempo y apareció mucho más tarde, no en el cuarto ni en el quinto, sino en el sexto LP de Queen, News Of The World en 1977. Otro tema de esta época que merece ser mencionado es una atípica composición de Freddie titulada Feelings Feelings que se pretendía incluir en el disco y finalmente fue descartada.

El album Sheer Heart Attack fue editado el 8 de Noviembre de 1974 y llegó al No 2 en Gran Bretaña, alcanzando el oro. Fue el primer disco de Queen que entró en el Top 20 americano, llegando a un impresionante No 12 (alcanzando el oro) y logrando posiciones altas en otras listas internacionales.

Como el disco anterior, Queen II, la imagen de la portada era una fotografía del gran amigo de Queen Mick Rock – el hombre del que se ha dicho que había capturado los 70. Para obtener la imagen única que aparece en la portada se embadurnó a los miembros de la banda con vaselina y luego se los roció con agua para lograr una imagen extraña muy particular. Se obtuvo el efecto deseado y la portada de Sheer Heart Attack resulta fascinante y memorable.

El primer single de Sheer Heart Attack apareció unas semanas antes que el álbum, el 11 de Octubre de 1974, siendo el primer single de doble cara A de Queen. Killer Queen acoplada con Flick Of The Wrist, ambas composiciones de Freddie, llegaron a un impresionante No. 2 en el Reino Unido, siendo el segundo single que llegó al Top 10 en ese año. En América, el mismo acoplamiento pero siendo Killer Queen la cara A y Flick Of The Wrist relegada a cara B, llegó a un respetable No 12, siendo el primer éxito americano de la banda. Killer Queen tuvo mucho éxito en todo el mundo pero, como le sucediera antes a Seven Seas Of Rhye, no tenía video de acompañamiento puesto que entonces no existían propiamente, hasta que en 1975 se produjo el hito de la visualización de Bohemian Rhapsody por parte de Bruce Gowers. Al contrario que en su país, se produjeron diferentes portadas para Killer Queen en todo el mundo, con algunos preciosos ejemplos en Japón, Italia y España, que se han convertido en grandes objetos de deseo de los coleccionistas posteriormente.

Aunque no había video promocional de Killer Queen, la banda actuó en Octubre en el programa de televisión británico Top Of The Pops dirigido por Robin Nash en el estudio de la BBC en Shepherds Bush donde Queen grabó una toma extra de Killer Queen para televisión, esta vez para Top Pop en Holanda.

El single tuvo pocas críticas, este es un extracto de lo publicado en el NME de esa época y constituye un ejemplo típico: “Queen tiene un sonido prueba de que no son una banda de un solo éxito”.

El siguiente single, Now I’m Here (acoplado con Lily Of The Valley) se editó el 17 de Enero de 1975, Elektra en América en cambio re editó Keep Yourself Alive acoplado con Lily Of The Valley y God Save The Queen, en Julio de ese año. El single llegó al No 11 en Inglaterra ayudado por las tocadas en radio y las apariciones televisivas, que incluían dos actuaciones poco vistas de Top Of The Pops, las cintas que no se conservan, fueron junto con otros muchos tesoros de la BBC, reutilizadas.
