Listen: Radio 2 Celebrates Queen

Your Ultimate Queen Songs with Steve Wright

As we prepare to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Queen’s first single and album in 1973, Steve Wright counts down the Ultimate Queen Songs - voted for by you.

In 1970, Freddie Mercury met Roger Taylor and Brian May (who had been performing as students in Brian’s band Smile); they recruited John Deacon in 1971 and the group, under Freddie’s suggested name of Queen, was fully formed.

Queen released their eponymous debut album and first single Keep Yourself Alive in July 1973, but they didn’t chart until March of the following year, with Seven Seas of Rhye reaching number ten, their debut album also entering the album charts and the Queen II album peaking at number five.

Since then, they have been pioneers in the world of huge live concert events and the emerging era of music videos with six UK number ones, 26 top ten singles and a total of 55 songs, spending 462 weeks in the Top 75.
